Bariliche try again later. I have to confess that I was not excited about reading another Andres Neuman book. I didn’t like the book, but forced myself to plow through to the end. So what made me want to give Andres Neuman another try? He smeared him with praise.
The past in pieces: migration in Andrés Neuman’s Bariloche | Guadalupe Gerardi –
Bariloche is Andres Neuman’s first novel. It was written when he was 22 years old, which is astounding when you contrast the brevity of the novel it is about pages in Spanish; no English translation is available. I’d like to volunteer my skills. Below is what I got out of my first reading of Bariloche. It will be my honor to re-read this incredible book many, many barilochf times, and to explore the rest of Neuman’s works.
Demetrio Rota is a middle-aged unmarried man who works as a garbage collector nwuman Buenos Aires. He lives in a sparsely furnished apartment, and his only hobby is assembling jigsaw puzzles that depict nature scenes reminiscent of his beloved Bariloche, the country town on the border of Lake Nahuel Huapi where he lived an almost idyllic childhood until his father fell ill and lost his job, forcing the family to move into a tiny, dark apartment in an urban complex.
Demetrio despises his current life in the big city. He is bored with his job and trapped in his past, daydreaming about the country life in Nadres and his first – and only – loving relationship with a woman.
There is a scene at the beginning of the novel in which Demetrio pulls out a broken doll from one of the garbage bags he has collected, and anddes gaze lingers long enough on the doll to make me think that Demetrio is recalling his first love, and the family they could aneres built together. How life could have turned out differently for him, had he stayed in Bariloche! The closest thing Demetrio has to a friend in the city is his colleague, El Negro, batiloche simple, kind man who truly cares about Demetrio, as we learn from the chapters told from El Negro’s point of view.
Demetrio, however, has no moral scruples about maintaining a two-year-long affair with El Negro’s wife, Veronica. Unlike the romantic, sweet relationship Demetrio had as a teenager in Bariloche, his relationship with Veronica is devoid of romance.
Demetrio simply uses Veronica for sex, and heuman all of her attempts to formalize the relationship by moving in together. Ultimately, Veronica ends the relationship, and Demetrio disappears, having surrendered his apartment to barilohce landlord and taken very few of his belonging with him. Presumably, he has returned to Bariloche. There is a pervasive melancholy in this novel.
Demetrio’s life has been wasted.
Bariloche (English, Spanish, Paperback)
He has no meaningful relationship with anyone. Nothing brings him joy. He is resigned to solitude, cynical, unmotivated and unhappy. It is slightly terrifying to step into his shoes and imagine having no reason for living, other than attending a miserable job, perfunctorily having sex with a person who means nothing to you, and assembling piece puzzles as a way to relive your childhood.
Demetrio’s character reminds me of the male characters in Michel Houellebecq’s novels, except zndres where the alienation of Houellebecq’s guys is often punctuated with humor and irony, Demetrio’s character is just pathetic, all the time.
