Text Processing and Forms Printing. The SAP script text processor uses the spool system for all of its output. Here are the main features of the interface between SAP script and the spool system: The character sets used by SAP script are defined in the spool system character set functions. SAP script printer fonts are defined in Font maintenancealso in the Spool menu. Because the composer fills text using printer-specific font metrics, SAPscript documents are already device-specific at this point.

They can be redirected only among printers that share the same font metrics. Print controls have not yet been resolved into printer escape sequences at this point in processing. The spool system identifies each character in the SAP sxpscript input character set. It then substitutes the correct binary value for the character from the character set specified ohf the device.

The binary value is the value that triggers printing of the character at the target output device.

The output character set is the first character set listed in the definition of the output device type. At this time, the spool system can use only a single output character set. It cannot switch character sets during character set conversion. Spool requests that are sent from SAP script can add an attribute to the output stream, the printer font to be used for the output.

The font does not alter which characters can be output. That is determined by the character set. Rather, it determines the appearance of the characters in the output. The characters may be in Times-Roman, Helvetica, or any other typeface defined in the SAPscript font maintenance function. SAP script uses the font specification to determine how to fill text. If the font is proportional variable-width charactersthen SAP script uses the character-width information the font metrics in the font definition to fill characters into output lines.

Adobe fonts are native PostScript fonts.

Without the font metric data, SAPscript cannot accurately fill text for a document that uses a Windows font. Not all output devices offer all of the fonts supported by SAP script. Each SAP script font is therefore automatically mapped to the most similar font supported by an output device. A form is a map of an output page, specifying where text is to be filled and specifying the attributes of the text. congert


A form is used to print out a check. The form specifies how and where to each piece of text on the check is to be printed. Each form names a page format, defined in the spool system, to set the paper size for the form. SAP script uses the physical paper dimensions in the page format to determine the printable area sapscrip filling text. This format defines the actions that are used to initialize the printer. If you define your own formats, then you must ensure that the format actions are compatible with the specifications in the SAP script form and page format.

That is, the printer commands defined in the format actions must sapscdipt to the format characteristics in the form. The specifications in a page format and the page format declaration in a form are documentary in nature.

They are implemented at the output device by the commands in the corresponding format actions. For example, the page size specified in the page format and any convvert command in an accompanying actionmust agree. A SAP script form specifies a single page format and orientation for a text. The new form may, however, change only the page orientation. The new form may not change the page format. As of Release 4. SAP recommends that you continue to use the old naming convention and that you continue to define only a single format in the spool system for each SAPscript page format.

In later releases, logic for convret among multiple spool system formats is covert to become available. At present, however, the spool system chooses for a SAPscript document the first format by name that has the right zapscript format and type. With these drivers, the command is sapscrupt into the driver and is not derived from a format action.

The printer typically will stop and display an error message if another paper size is currently loaded in the active paper tray. The STN2 driver sets the number of lines per page in its Printer initialization actions.

Some line printers display an error message and stop printing if this is different than the lines-per-page that was specified at the printer console. Simpler line printers use the STN2 lines-per-page, regardless of whether it is correct for the page length of the continuous form in use at the printer.

If a Resource name has been specified in a SAP script form, then an output request that uses the form can conevrt the paper from a particular paper tray at the printer. Should you have a “line printer” device driver STN2 that has multiple tray capabilities, then you will need to add the corresponding print controls to the device type. In SAPscript printing, the spool system checks during format selection whether paper-tray specifications have been made for the output device.

Converting SAP Script to OTF

If yes, it uses this information to correct the format selection. That is, the spool system checks to see which page formats are offered at a printer. If a window in a form definition is to appear 1 CM from the left edge of the paper, then on a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer, the window will actually be printed 1.

The LaserJet starts its printable area 0. On a PostScript printer, by contrast, the window will actually appear 1 centimeter from the left edge of the paper, because PostScript uses the physical boundaries of the paper for its coordinate system.
